29 April 1997 from 11:00am to 4:00pm
Tokyo Industrial Commerce Center in Hamamatsucho
— by Richard "Pocky" Kim
Fujishima World is an annual event held to celebrate the works of the
artist Fujishima Kosuke, famous for his AA!
MEGAMI-SAMA and TAIHO SHICHAUZO!
(You're Under Arrest!) comics, as well as for his character designs
in the hit video game, SAKURA TAISEN (Sakura Wars).
Nearly all of the things for sale at this dojinshi convention,
as would be expected, were of AA! MEGAMI-SAMA,
TAIHO SHICHAUZO!, or SAKURA
TAISEN. Likewise, almost all of the costume players were
appearing as characters from Fujishima-sensei's works, from the
goddess Belldandy to the vigilante Strike Otoko.
In addition to the usual dojinshi sales, there were some
other events going on as well. A small costume play contest was held,
with prizes for the winners (the winners this year were a trio of
goddesses, with two sets of costumes; the goddess outfits and the
swimsuits from the manga). In addition, there were two other
competitions - a SAKURA TAISEN Columns
video game competition, and a 'Mini-yon-ku' (mini 4 wheel drive)
race track, in honor of
the 'Nekomi Automotive Club' in AA! MEGAMI-SAMA.
(A mini-yon-ku is a model car which runs on two AA batteries; the
parts are all interchangeable, and it is an increasing fad in
Japan.)
As the event came to an end, the staff reminded the
gathered fans to make sure and buy the upcoming SAKURA
TAISEN OVAs, and expressed their hopes for another AA! MEGAMI-SAMA series. As the fans prepared to
leave for the real world once again, there was a feeling of
anxiousness, of hope that the next Fujishima World would happen
soon.
